FIRST Scholars

The FIRST Scholars Program supports students who are the first in their immediate family to attend college, empowering them to thrive throughout their high school and college journey. Rooted in Notre Dame’s mission to form lifelong learners, spiritual seekers, justice advocates, and community leaders, the program centers on equity, access, and belonging.

The FIRST acronym reflects the program’s core values and areas of focus:

First — Embracing the first-generation identity — not the only, and not the last
Identity — Exploring intersectionality, agency, confidence, and growth mindset
Resources — Connecting students and families with essential tools and support
Skills — Building academic, personal, and college readiness skills
Time — Creating time for peers and supporters to meet, work, seek, and grow

Through dedicated programming and a supportive community, FIRST Scholars gain the knowledge, resources, and confidence to navigate the college preparatory experience. Students recognize their strengths, build new skills, and grow as leaders — not only as first-generation students, but as trailblazers for those who follow.

From college visits to college fairs, FIRST Scholars explore opportunities beyond the classroom, gaining firsthand insights into college life and future pathways — including Santa Clara University, University of San Francisco, and University of California, Santa Cruz, as well as a College Fair at Foothill College, and more — as seen in the experiences below.
