Notre Dame is proud to support Black History Month by allocating 100% of our Amazon Smile proceeds in February towards the Notre Dame Village Scholarship fund. Each Village Scholarship is comprised of a circle of 40 donors who want to take an active role in ensuring that an increasing number of Black students of African ancestry attend Notre Dame. Notre Dame's director of college counseling, DeEnna Holohan, was recently recognized as one of only 12 recipients, nationwide, of the 2021 Counselors that Change Lives Award. The awards are presented by Colleges That Change Lives (CTCL), a non-profit organization dedicated to the ideal of a student-centered college search.
Notre Dame’s fall performance had to be a bit different this year due to the pandemic. This annual presentation is produced, directed and performed by students. Instead of having a regular play this year, they chose to have a drama festival, which is a performance consisting of scenes from different playwrights, including Shakespeare, ND students and outside sources. Notre Dame was honored to be recognized by NBC Bay Area News on Inauguration Day and featured in their coverage of the event. Our students were sought out for their thoughts on the impact of the first women Vice President of the United States.
On Wednesday, January 20th, Notre Dame held a virtual watch party for students to witness the Inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris. Although a majority of students attended the livestream remotely, a small group of seniors had the opportunity to watch from a classroom in the Center for Women’s Leadership.

Notre Dame's Women of Impact Speaker Series featured a discussion with San Francisco Giant's coach Alyssa Nakken and Olympic medal winner Brenda Villa. This inspirational and informative session was moderated by senior Maddi Wong '21 whose podcast, Halftime Halfway, features interviews with women who have broken barriers in the sports world.
Recently Notre Dame invited former Black Panther Party* (BPP) members Katherine Campbell, Dr. Saturu Ned, and Steve McCutchen to have a virtual conversation with juniors and seniors. Led by moderator Milton Reynolds of Facing History & Ourselves, the three speakers answered questions centering around their personal experiences with the Black Panther Party, the original purpose of the organization, and the legacy they carried with them.

On the night of November 6th, Notre Dame held its first virtual homecoming celebration. The theme this year was “Game Show,” featuring Family Feud, Jeopardy, the Price is Right, performances from the cheerleaders and many more. Both faculty and students participated in each game, making some unique memories during this unusual time!
NBC Bay Area and KTVU recently interviewed members of Notre Dame's League of Young Women Voters student club to find out what having a female vice president of the United States would mean to them. The group, although too young to cast a vote, has been actively encouraging the ND community.
In October, performing art students from Fleurs du Soleil, String Ensemble and Regent Harmonies pulled together individual recordings of "Together" by For King and Country for the YWCA Inspire Luncheon. This virtual event had hundreds of attendees from across the nation (and internationally too), and honorees included Chanel Miller, Ambassador Susan Rice, and journalist Audie Cornish. We will rise together.
Over the past couple of months the Janksters, Notre Dame's robotics team, have engaged in hands-on engineering projects despite having to meet virtually. While regular robotics team activities have been impacted by shelter-in-place, the robotics team and it’s leaders have worked hard to find creative ways for the team to develop and improve critical engineering skills. A recent example is the Roller Coaster Challenge. The challenge was to build a roller coaster with five unique elements using only materials found in their home.

With loosened county restrictions, Notre Dame is allowing multiple after-school activities, including the Regent Collective Dance Company (RCDC), to return to campus under certain conditions. The varsity and junior varsity teams have gone back to dancing on campus once a week, outdoors in the 3rd Street parking lot.
On Thursday, October 29th, the Notre Dame chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 82 new members in a virtual ceremony. Students were selected by the Scholarship Committee for demonstrating a high standard of excellence in their character, scholarship, leadership and service.

Each fall since 2015 the senior class has painted the bell in Pardini Park in their class colors. This week the Class of 2021 Teal & Red Tigers did just that while ensuring compliance with social distancing regulations. Members of the class council took turns sanding off the old color and applying the new. Now it shines as a beacon for the Class of 2021!
In August, Notre Dame’s robotics team held their annual boot camp, where new students have a chance to get an inside look at the team. The Janksters are an all-girls team and aim to inspire and introduce young girls to STEM. Usually, boot camp takes place on the Notre Dame campus, but with the shelter-in-place, Team 1967 had to think outside the box. Many Janksters worked tirelessly to create the first-ever fully online boot camp.
Icons of all kinds have become part of our twenty-first century communication patterns. Whether emojis, signage, photographs, or recognizable graphics, all of these images aim to communicate some meaning -- sometimes in the absence of words and sometimes to summarize the words we might otherwise use. As we prepare for next week's Class of 2020 Baccalaureate Mass, we have been guided by the importance of icons to our Notre Dame spiritual life.
