Celebrating the Class of 2024 With a Special Liturgy

The Freshman Family Liturgy is a special mass that Notre Dame holds for the freshman class every. Normally held in Julie Billart during the school day, this year it was held on the evening of October 29 as a livestream from the beautiful Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, where ND usually holds all-school liturgies.

What makes the Freshman Family Liturgy different from other masses is that each part of the mass is explained for those who may not practice Catholicism. As a diverse community, it is important to Notre Dame to ensure that everyone feels included, regardless of the religion they practice. The tech team inserted videos of students that introduced the parts of the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist: the two main parts of a mass. There were also student volunteers who physically attended mass to play instruments and read the first reading and prayers of the faithful. All who participated at the cathedral were socially distanced and wore masks.

There was a lot of behind-the-scenes work that went on to ensure the liturgy ran smoothly. Despite some technical difficulties, the Dragons were able to participate in this important Notre Dame tradition in their own, unique way.
