Student Group Tackles Tough Subjects

On Friday the 30th, Lighthouse hosted their first-ever virtual suicide awareness presentation as part of their Tackling Taboo Topics series. Lighthouse is a leadership club at Notre Dame that hopes to break the stigma that surrounds mental health and other social issues through holding various discussions and interactive meetings. In the past, Lighthouse has hosted in-person presentations on topics ranging from human trafficking to adolescent stress and anxiety. In addition, they have held multiple Self Care Days on campus for students of all grades to take a moment to relax and destress during their busy school day.

This year’s suicide awareness presentation was extremely interesting and thorough. The members discussed the philosophy behind suicide, shared statistics and figures, and helped the audience learn how to identify signs of suicidal behavior. In addition, they shared suicide prevention tips and how each person can help family members or friends struggling with suicidal thoughts. "I love how when we were talking about mental health and suicide prevention, you guys let us know that it’s OK if we take a step back and take a moment to ourselves since it’s a tough topic," shared Ginni '23. "Thank you for bringing these topics up to talk about! They’re important."

Lighthouse recently released its official website, which includes helpful resources, videos, and past presentations. If you’re interested in learning more, please visit the website here.
