Dulce '24 Reflects on Earning “Saint of the City” Recognition from Diocese of San Jose
Receiving the Saint in the City Award this year was a humbling and inspiring experience that profoundly impacted my leadership journey. This recognition affirmed the value of my contributions to campus ministry, motivating me to continue striving for excellence. The award has served as a reminder of the impact that dedicated leadership and service can have on a community and has fueled my desire to make an even greater difference in the lives of those around me.
My leadership journey at ND began in my role as a Latinas Unidas officer for the last two years. I have had the privilege of leading and empowering a community of strong, vibrant Latinas who strive for unity and support. Through this position, I have fostered an inclusive environment that celebrates our shared cultural heritage while embracing the diverse perspectives within our group. As a leader, I have had the fortune to organize events that support community involvement, empowerment and education. This experience has not only deepened my understanding of effective leadership, but has also allowed me to contribute to the flourishing of Latinas Unidas on campus.
Simultaneously, my involvement in campus ministry as Chair of the Peer Ministry Leadership Team has provided me opportunities to connect with my spirituality and serve the broader community. In this role, I have participated and worked together with my peers to create memorable and mindful liturgies where the ND community benefits from a time of peace. Being part of campus ministry has broadened my perspective and strengthened my commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others. It has taught me the importance of humility, kindness, and the transformative power of community service.
This journey of leadership, service, and recognition has inspired me to dream beyond my current surroundings and contemplate pursuing higher education in Boston, especially after being able to experience the environment through a conference last summer. The city's rich academic and cultural landscape, coupled with its renowned institutions, beckons me to explore new horizons and contribute to a diverse and dynamic community. I am driven by the belief that the skills and insights gained from my leadership roles, coupled with the transformative experiences at ND, will serve as a solid foundation for my academic pursuits in Boston. My dream is not only to acquire knowledge and skills but also to leverage my experiences to continue making meaningful contributions to the communities I am a part of, both locally and globally.
