First Scholars Program Students Visit Santa Clara University

By Emely Garate ‘24

This past Friday, the sophomores and juniors in Notre Dame’s First Scholars program visited Santa Clara University to engage with student panelists about the college application process and gather some general college advice. The purpose of this trip was to give first generation students the space to express their curiosities about college and to inspire empowerment as they approach an unfamiliar chapter in their lives. For the Notre Dame students, this session was extremely immersive and provided  insight into the college experience and life from the perspective of other first-generation students.

The topic of being first-generation is not discussed often enough for us to find opportunities, but this session provided us with a comfortable environment of encouragement and information about the many possibilities through higher education. As a junior who is beginning the college search process, I found this trip to be memorable and educational because our conversations were honest, validating and inclusive. Being first-generation is not discussed enough and this session provided a comfortable environment of encouragement and information about the many possibilities in higher education. I am grateful for the students and administrators who took the time to provide a unique experience where we could empower one another through shared stories.
