Crown & Shield Hosts Journalism Workshop

Crown & Shield Hosts Journalism Workshop

By Anna Yang '23

Last week, the Crown & Shield newspaper editorial team hosted the first summer journalism workshop to teach incoming juniors, sophomores and freshmen the basics of journalism-writing and newspaper design. Over the summer, the editorial team designed and organized the workshop, carefully crafting each lesson to make it exciting for students new to journalism. Throughout the five-day program, students learned a variety of lessons from the editorial staff, such as Op-Ed writing, journalism photography and journalism ethics. They also had the opportunity to hear from a guest speaker, Emma Talley, who was the editor-in-chief of the Stanford Daily and a breaking news intern at the San Francisco Chronicle. By the end of the workshop, every student had produced their own article, which is now published on the Crown & Shield website! On the last day, the students celebrated their publication with a movie viewing of The Post. We are looking forward to an exciting year of journalism ahead!
