Notre Dame Senior Receives Commendation from the City of San Jose

Recently Alexia Gutiérrez '20 received a commendation from the San Jose City Council and Mayor Sam Liccardo for her work to make golf and STEM more accessible for Latinx youth through her organization, Latinx Golf.  Since early 2018, the Latinx Golf program has offered complimentary golf clinics, golf lessons and STEM-focused activities to engage first-generation-to-college Latinx elementary, middle, and high school students. Alexia's program strives to make the connection between golf and related STEM fields.

Students receive expert instruction led by top PGA pros like Greg Fitzgerald, who serves on the board of directors of Latinx Golf.  Once students complete at least one lesson through Latinx Golf, they are registered with The First Tee for low-cost lessons designed to build their skills and ensure they are ready for high school golf. Through a grant provided by the Northern California Golf Association, students and their families receive free transportation to and from all Latinx Golf sponsored events while sponsors provide golf equipment and complimentary access to Cinnabar Hills and Coyote Creek.  The program also educates Latinx parents about the benefits of having both golf and STEM in a student's profile.

Thank you to Jose Morales (Brooklyn '23) for the photos.
