Notre Dame Celebrates Holy Week

Students, faculty and staff enjoyed a morning walk to our downtown place of worship, Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph for a Holy Week service on Tuesday. The liturgy was presided over by Monsignor Francis Cilia and featured spoken word and dancing performances by members of the Black Student Union.

The theme of the liturgy was Rise Up. During Holy Week, we recognize the challenges in our world as we remember the death of Jesus Christ and await his resurrection.

In his homily, Monsignor Cilia made connections between Holy Week, the death and resurrection of Jesus and the need for young voices to rise up in moments like the walkout and Walk for our Lives. Quoting Pope Francis' Palm Sunday message that young people must speak out, he encouraged young people to raise their voices for those in need and for justice.

The liturgy also included a blessing of immersion trip participants as well as all those who have taken action to rise up in leadership, justice and solidarity.
