Erica Haedrich '08
Erica was accepted into a program, along with 5 other American volunteers, and spent this past summer (2012) in Gros Morne, Haiti, working as a camp counselor at a local camp, Kan Klodin (english: Camp Claudine). Haiti was nothing like she expected, but everything she didn't know she needed. The hardest part, of working with her 7-year old students was the language barrier: she spoke only English and the kids only spoke Creole. This was also true with 20 of the 22 Haitian counselors. The most important lesson she learned in the Haitian culture is that "living simply" is easy, when you have no other choice. The littlest things she realized had been taken for granted, and when she returned, realized she no longer wanted them.
