Advanced Sewing
Prerequisite: Incoming 5th-12th graders
Advance your sewing skills while creating a special one of a kind garment for yourself. This class is for students who already have some experience sewing from a pattern. Students will visit the fabric store to purchase a pattern(s) and fabric to make a one of a kind costume, ensemble, or contemporary garment of their choice. Students must have prior sewing experience to take this class and should bring an item they have sewn themselves to demonstrate their ability before determining the complexity of their class project. Sewing machines and ironing equipment will be provided. Students will be invited to participate in a fashion show on the last day of class. (Course fee does not include cost of materials.)

Art in the City
Prerequisite: Incoming 5th-12th graders
Come see the art that San Jose has to offer! Visit the San Jose Museum of Art and downtown art galleries exhibiting ceramics, prints and photos. Explore the diverse art to be found in our downtown plazas. Discover how art is influenced by social, political and economic factors in the community. This course complements the Studio Art class.

Basic Stagecraft
Prerequisite: Incoming 5th-12th graders
Welcome to the world of theater set design! In this class you will learn to create "flats", the movable two-dimensional set backgrounds that bring the stage to life. This class will teach you to use hand and power tools safely and techniques for painting backgrounds.

Beginning Sewing
Prerequisite: Incoming 5th-12th graders
This class is a hands-on, entry level class where students learn to safely use a sewing machine, iron, and use other construction tools and techniques. Students will build confidence on the machine by sewing several small projects. We will review how to select a pattern, choose and purchase fabric, prepare fabric for cutting, read and follow pattern cutting and assembly instructions. We will visit a fabric store where each student will purchase patterns and fabric to make a pair of pajama bottoms, simple top, and skirt. Sewing machines and ironing equipment will be provided. Students will be invited to participate in a fashion show on the last day of class.

Ceramics: Introduction to Handbuilding
Prerequisite: Incoming 5th-12th graders
Try your hand at creating ceramic art. This class will introduce you to the nature of clay, taking you through the process from construction (pinch, coil, and slab), and a diversity of glazing techniques, to the final firing of your artwork.

Creative Writing and Storytelling
Prerequisite: Incoming 7th-12th graders
Would you like to enthrall an audience and keep them hanging on your every word? Do you have creative ideas you want to express in print and on stage? In this workshop you will explore a variety of creative writing styles, like slam poetry, short stories and comic monologues with the aim of performing your pieces for an audience.

Digital Photography
Prerequisite: Incoming 5th-12th graders
Are you getting the most out of your digital camera? Through hands-on learning and field trips to inspirational locations, you will learn all about your camera, as well as composition and Photoshop techniques to help you get great prints out of your best shots. (Please bring your own 3 megapixel digital camera.)

Digital Video Production
Prerequisite: Incoming 5th-12th graders
Would you like to try your hand at being a movie director? How about creating a music video for your favorite song or the next viral YouTube video? In Digital Video Production you will learn to shoot a music video using a digital video camera, then edit scenes and add sound and special effects. Ready, set, action!

Quick on your feet when it comes to a witty comeback? Work on your comedy skills in this hilarious class that will keep you in stitches!

Needlecraft

Are you crafty? Or would you like to be? This class will introduce you to knitting and crocheting through small projects and includes a field trip to the Museum of Quilts and Textiles.

Novice Speech & Debate
Prerequisite: Incoming 5th-12th graders
Get a head start on the upcoming Forensics season! Notre Dame’s Novice Speech & Debate class will help you develop your selection and delivery for individual events and teach you about Parliamentary Debate. You will develop your skills interactively in small group sessions with practice rounds and critiques. Students who are interested in Forensics, but are not necessarily competing next year, are welcome!

Studio Art

Learn about composition, color, line and other key elements that create masterpieces. With guidance from an art instructor, spend studio time free to choose your subject and medium. This course complements the Art in the City class where students explore how artists engage with the San Jose community.
