Junior Book Awards
as of May 5, 2009

Prestigious colleges donate books to be awarded to students for their academic achievement and community service. The criteria includes the following: an excellent academic record, qualities of leadership and service to the school community, significant contributions to the extracurricular life of the school, leadership roles within community service endeavors. The books this year came from the following colleges and universities:

Mt. Holyoke Book Award - for a member of the junior class who has produced an excellent academic record and who has exhibited qualities of leadership and service in the school community. For 2009, this award is given to Sabreen Aulakh.

University of Pennsylvania Book Award – for a high school junior who best exemplifies the qualities and characteristics of Benjamin Franklin, founder of the University of Pennsylvania – scholar, innovator, and one who serves the community. For 2009, this award is given to Kiersten Sandvick.

University of Portland Book Award – for a high school junior who exemplifies concern, interest, and inclination in the subject of the environment showing strong talents in the field of science and environmental issues. For 2009, this award is given to Emily Chou.

University of Notre Dame outstanding academic achievement; a commitment to shared learning and faith and an indomitable spirit. For 2009, this award is given to Yuki Dohi.

University of Miamidemonstrated outstanding leadership ability and academic excellence. For 2009, this award is given to Jessica Ruth Zeta.

Yale - for a junior who demonstrates academic achievement and leadership as well as community service. For 2009, this award is given to Jessica Jin.

Harvard – for a junior who demonstrates academic excellence. This year, this award is given to Emily Fourie.

Wellesley Collegefor a junior who exemplifies academic excellence and leadership in her school and community. This year, this award goes to Kiran Palla.

Dartmouth Collegefor a junior who shows outstanding extracurricular activity and/or community service. This year, the award is given to Alyssa Cabaltera.

Williams Collegefor a junior who has demonstrated intellectual leadership and has made a significant contribution to the extracurricular life of the school. This year, the award is given to Meera Ramakrishnan.

St. Michael’s Collegefor a junior who is a member of an honor society that is sponsored by her high school (National Honor Society or California Scholarship Federation) and who demonstrates a sincere and sustained commitment to community service activities and who has taken on a leadership role within their community service endeavors. This year’s award winner is Alma Acosta.

Bausch and Lomb Awardgiven by the University of Rochester to a junior who has high achievement and rigor in science classes and a high PSAT Math and/or SAT Math scores. This year, the award will be given to Sophie Crinion.

The George Eastman Young Leaders Awardgiven by the University of Rochester to a junior who has strong leadership experience at school and in the community; who has high grades and challenging courses; and who has extensive involvement in extracurricular activities. This year, the award will be given to Manali Shah.

The Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award – given to a junior who demonstrates a commitment to understanding and addressing difficult social issues; who shows leadership and dedication to community action; and who has strong grades and rigorous courses taken in the humanities and social sciences. This year, the award will be given to Jennifer Padilla.

The Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technologygiven to a junior who shows a strong interest in innovation and/or information technology; who leads other students to new approaches to old problems; and who maximizes the use of internal communication tools on the web. This year, the award will be given to Pankti Doshi.

The Rensselaer Medal Winner – is given to a junior who demonstrates potential for success in a challenging academic setting; who excels in advanced math and science classes; who exhibits significant involvement in extracurricular activities. In addition, if this student is accepted and enrolls at Rensselaer for college, a $15,000 per year scholarship is guaranteed for 4 years. This year, the Rensselaer Medal goes to Michelle Khouri.

Brown Book Award – given to a junior who demonstrates over all academic achievement, is awarded this year to Natalia Nguyen.

Regis Book Awardgiven to a junior who manifests integrity and a personal commitment to activism and service to others, is awarded this year to Alison Agustin.
