Over twenty thousand people, including five Notre Dame San Jose students and two teachers marched in a “funeral” procession around the gates of Fort Benning, Georgia . The marchers carried white crosses for the victims in Latin America who have lost their lives, in civil, political and economic battles at the hands of their own people (soldiers trained at the School of Americas ).
The march was one of the many events at this year’s Ignation Family Teach-In, organized by the Ignatian Solidarity Network (ISN) from November 16th through 18th, 2007. The events focused on living "a faith that does justice" and to call for an end to unjust institutions, including the School of Americas.
“It was incredibly eye opening and very powerful experience for all of us. The girls have learned so much and are proud to have been witnesses for the Notre Dame San Jose community” said Stephanie Neustadter, Associate Director of Community Service Learning teacher at Notre Dame High School in San Jose , CA.
Beth Keenan, Junior at Notre Dame San Jose said, “It opened my eyes to what's really happening in our world and educated me on the many things that I can do to make a difference. I now look at the world in a very different way.”
