Mock Elections at Notre Dame

Mock Elections at Notre Dame

By Juliet Barry '17

One of the values and traditions of Notre Dame is its engagement in the community. The school is committed to fostering active membership in society including participation in elections.

Notre Dame held a liturgy on the morning of November eighth to pray for leadership, peace and unity in our county. This sentiment was echoed throughout the school as we prayed together in our home rooms.

In addition, a mock election gave a voice to those members of the ND community not eligible to vote. More than half of the student body showed up to learn about the propositions through infographics and cast Scantron ballots. Secretary Hillary Clinton may not have broken the highest glass ceiling in our nation, but Notre Dame students and teachers voted to elect her as the first female president by a ninety percent majority. The full mock election results are available on the Student Announcements page.

There is a high volume of noise surrounding the presidential election results, and yet this writer finds herself at a loss for what to say to such a diverse community. When there are no words, our actions speak for us.

We, the Notre Dame community, showed that diversity does not have to mean division through our mock election. It is with that spirit of respect at the foundation of our prayers that we move forward into the future.
