A Wonderful Year
December 10, 2007
It is always a challenge for school people to think according to the lunar calendar. January marks the beginning of the middle of the school year, and there is no time to sit back and rest on one’s laurels. That time will come in June. But for the record book, there are the great achievements of 2007, so let me try to twist around and see the world according to history…and the moon.
- January: The Robotics Team receives another Google grant for the 2007 FIRST competition.
- February: ND Crab Fest breaks all records, raising $27,000 for laptop computers.
- March: Notre Dame received a 6-year clear WASC accreditation that will bring us to the year 2013.
- April: 29 ND students with faculty and staff travel to Tijuana Mexico and built two houses.
- May: Greg Mortensen, author and activist for education of girls in Pakistan, visited our campus and began a relationship with the Notre Dame community and their support of the Central Asia Institute.
- June: 147 young women from the Class of 2007 joined the ranks of the ND alumna and headed off to colleges and universities across the US and beyond.
- July: Notre Dame launched its first community read selection: Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen
- August: Construction began on the Student Life Center renovation promising more than 4,000 square feet of additional space.
- September: 165 young women began their freshman year at ND: the Class of 2011, the Orange and Royal Blue Warriors!
- October: 62 ND students donated their hair to Locks of Love to be used for wigs for cancer patients.
- November: Notre Dame Varsity Tennis won the West Bay Athletic League Championship for the 4th season in a row!
- December: 330 ND students and their guests danced the night away at the annual winter ball Candy Cane Lane.
Bring on 2008! The year of the pink and silver Tigers (Class of 2008) promises even greater things to come. I look forward to celebrating the many Notre Dame moments and achievements with you.
See you on campus,
Mary Beth Riley
