On Tuesday May 1st 2007, Notre Dame hosted a book talk which was initiated by the Commonwealth Club Silicon. The book was "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time" by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Mr. Mortenson talked about his experience of attempting to climb Pakistan's K2 (the earth's second highest peak) which leads him to devolted his life to building schools in the remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
After Mr. Mortenson's talk at Notre Dame, an anonymous donor purchased a copy of this book for each student and employee on campus. In addition to that, 10 hard cover copies of this book were donated to the Notre Dame library.
This book has been chosen as the ND theme book that everyone will read it for 2007-2008.
Feedback from ND community:
"Three Cups of Tea drew me in to a world where the metaphor of climbing towards one's goals for bettering the world for others was a picture that remains with me as I work with young students climbing towards their goals."
"I think Greg Mortenson's story and subsequent book, Three Cups of Tea, is the epitome of compassion and good intentions. His mission is not only heroic but it sets a precedent for others to help those in need. It is imperative that we, as people, know the true meaning of compassion and Mr. Mortenson emulates the behavior and mindset that we need in the world and society of corruption, lies, and destruction."

"Greg Mortenson is an extremely generous and gracious person. He is so dedicated to his work and the people of the Middle East. I admire his courage and determination to build schools and keep the peace. It is amazing how he devoted his life to helping out others and bettering their lives. Greg Mortenson is also very brave and strong because he has seen and dealt with many horrific sights. He is a man to honor and definitely look up to."
"If everyone cared half as much as Greg Mortenson does about education and friendship, the world would be a more peaceful and unified place."
